That Time I Tried to Recreate a Fairy's Cake with Powdered Donuts There’s a scene in Sleeping Beauty that never fails to make me smile. It’s the part where Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather—three well-meaning fairy godmothers—attempt to bake a birthday cake for Briar Rose without magic. Determined to be ordinary for a day, they dive headfirst into flour, frosting, and fire hazards. The result? A leaning tower of chaos, precariously held together by a broomstick and willpower. Naturally, I felt inspired. As someone who grew up on a steady diet of Disney classics, memory-keeping, and the occasional kitchen catastrophe, I decided it was time to honor that iconic moment with a DIY recreation. But I didn’t exactly have time to bake a three-tier sponge from scratch, nor did I trust my structural engineering skills. So I did what any good fairy would do in a pinch—I reached for powdered gem donuts. Yes. Donuts. From a bag. And a tub of cream cheese frosting. (Don’t judge the magic.) To get that dreamy-blue frosting effect from the film, I colored the icing using a Hawaiian Punch berry blue drink mix. It looked spot on—drippy, cartoonish, and perfect for my video short. But I should warn you now: it tasted like regret. Assembling the cake was an adventure in itself. I stacked the donuts with toothpicks, then swapped in a striped paper straw as my make-believe broomstick for support. The result was... magnificent. A wobbly, sugar-dusted tribute to fairy ambition. I managed to snap a few pictures and roll video footage just in time—because within five seconds, the whole thing collapsed. Like, truly folded in on itself like a sleepy hedgehog. And I laughed. Because honestly? That’s the magic. The scene I recreated was never about a perfect cake. It was about doing your best with limited tools, love in your heart, and a whole lot of determination. Just like the fairies. Just like Walt. Just like me. My short video resonated far more than I expected. Viewers laughed along with me, and cheered on my donut-fueled chaos. It reminded me that sometimes the best stories come from the messes we make while trying to create something beautiful. So consider this post the first in a new series I’m tentatively calling "Technicolor Kitchen Catastrophes." I’ll be attempting other iconic cakes, treats, and animated feasts from the Disney canon—some successful, some gloriously not. And you’re invited to come along for the ride.
🍩✨ Stay Tuned: Want to recreate the mess yourself? Here's a printable “Disaster Cake Recipe Card”. Until then, you can watch the original short (here). The story of the battle between these two has been around for a long time. One the face of beauty; the other the face of evil. Anyone who knows me, knows that Sleeping Beauty's castle is my favorite castle. Walt specifically had a part in overseeing it's creation. Where it all began!!
This special, collectible locket is a true treasure for any princess. The locket is a rose gold plated necklace that hangs gracefully around your neck, displaying a double-sided embossed storybook pendant; one side shows the front of the "book" with the Sleeping Beauty original 1959 logo, while the other side shows the silhouette of Princess Aurora. Clasped with a magnet closure, the inside of the locket reveals a round well of cream rouge. Once the product has been completely used, this necklace can be worn as a locket and the rouge can easily be replaced by a small photo of someone dear to your heart.

Chain length is 11 inches. Locket is 1.375 x 1.25 x 0.25 inches. 2017 Besame Cosmetics launched a LE Agent Carter collection. I did not buy any at that time, but have since been on the hunt for anything from this collection. While I was in L.A., I visited the Besame headquarters and boutique in Burbank. As previously mentioned the Agent Carter collection is no longer available, but I did take several photos of the beautiful boutique and the current 60th Anniversary Sleeping Beauty collection. When you walk inside, you're transported to another place and time. The walls are lined with open cabinetry and enclosed glass shelving that house vintage makeup displays. The 60th Anniversary Sleeping Beauty collection is front and center, housed in a clear display cube. Lipstick staples and customer favorites are stocked inside the open shelves. Behind the enclosed vintage displays, are amazing bullet tubes of lipstick, vintage vanity mirror sets and pallets of rouge. The previous Disney x Besame collab Mermaid Lagoon was still on display. Very few items are available of this adorable collection. The Mickey Mouse lipstick duo was on sale $30! In the back room is a photo backdrop and three make up vanity stations for when Besame holds their makeup classes. The Sleeping Beauty Royal Vanity mirror $58 is rose gold and decorated with filigree. Gorgeous!!
And of course, I got my chance to play Sleeping Beauty lying on her Royal couch, clutching the vanity mirror. |
