Walt Wednesday #17
Walt and Admiral Charles C. Kirkpatrick watch on as Mrs. Mildred Nelson, wife of the chief machinist on the the first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, christens Disneyland sub D-301, also named “Nautilus” on June 14, 1959. Shortly after the opening of the Disneyland Submarines, which coincided with the opening of the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Disneyland-Alweg Monorail, Joe Fowler (then Disneyland’s general manager and a retired U.S. Navy admiral) was summoned to Walt’s office at the Studios where he was joined by other Disneyland Imagineers. Walt congratulated Joe on his efforts and presented him with a plaque designating him as the “Commander-in-Chief of the Disneyland Navy.” However, Walt was quick to note “But don’t forget, that I am still the overall secretary of defense.”
